Common workflows

Step-by-step recipes, from your first clip to retargeting onto your own rigs.

#A. Your first generated clip

  1. Open Settings, pick a backend, connect (Cloud login or Local Test).
  2. In Skeleton, click Create Skeleton (or pick an existing one). Watch the pill turn ready.
  3. On the Prompt Timeline, double-click to make a block and type e.g. "a person walks forward and waves."
  4. In Text to Motion → Output Target, choose New Take.
  5. Press Ctrl+G (or click Generate Motion). Watch the Console and progress bar.

#B. Sequence several actions

  1. Add multiple prompt blocks on the timeline, one per action, in order.
  2. Use Alt-resize to butt blocks together; set Transition frames (Advanced) for the blend.
  3. Choose Story mode if you want each action as its own clip, or New Take for one continuous take.
  4. Generate.

#C. Pin a hand or a path

  1. Open the Constraints sub-card and pick a type (e.g. Right Arm or Path).
  2. Move the playhead to the frame you want, pose the rig, and click Add Constraint — or click the constraint icon on a timeline block.
  3. Drag the viewport/timeline marker to fine-tune. Use [/] to hop between pins.
  4. Raise CFG weight (constraint) in Advanced if the AI isn't honoring the pin strongly enough, then generate.

#D. Make it hand-editable (HIK)

  1. Ensure the skeleton has an HIK character (the Skeleton card's HIK line should read green).
  2. In Layer & Rig, enable Bake to Control Rig after import.
  3. Generate — the result is plotted onto the Control Rig and ready to tweak by hand.

#E. Transfer the motion to another rig (HIK retargeting)

  1. Generate the motion on the SOMA rig as usual — it is already HIK-characterized.
  2. Make sure the destination rig is characterized in HIK too (MotionBuilder's Character Controls).
  3. On the destination character, set Input / Source to the Animatica SOMA character. The destination rig now follows the generated motion live.
  4. Plot the animation onto the destination's skeleton or Control Rig to bake it in.

#F. Generate straight onto your production rig

The transfer above is not the only way: the server retargets too, so you can skip the intermediate rig entirely.

  1. Select your rig in the Skeleton card and click Adopt — its current pose is stored as the bind pose.
  2. Set Settings → Retarget route to ServerAuto picks it too whenever the server reports it can retarget.
  3. Prompt and generate as usual. The Console names the route, the rig's hierarchy goes with the request, and the motion arrives on your rig's own joint names.

Use E when you want the motion on a characterized SOMA rig first (and MotionBuilder's own retargeting controls); use F when you want the result on your rig directly. Note that Full Body and hand/foot pins are checked against the model's joint names on this route — see Skeleton.
